Actor Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s district secretary is among the three people who have been arrested in connection with the stampede on Saturday evening in Tamil Nadu that left 41 dead. The development comes two days after the tragic stampede shocked the entire nation.

They have been booked under sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 110 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 125 (endangering life), and 223 (disobedience to order) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Section 3 of the Tamil Nadu Public Property (Prevention of Damage and Loss) Act, 1992.

Meanwhile, an FIR filed following in the incident said that the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief arrived late and stayed inside his campaign van for a long time, triggering anxiety and excitement among the waiting crowd.

While no complaint was registered against the actor-turned politician, the FIR named three senior party functionaries have been named in the FIR — TVK Karur North district secretary Mathiazhagan, state general secretary Bussy Anand, and deputy general secretary Nirmal Kumar.

Police said the chaos erupted as the crowd rushed forward, eager to catch a glimpse of actor Vijay. Many people climbed onto steel sheds and nearby trees to get a better view. However, the structures gave way under the weight, causing people to fall on those standing below. This triggered panic, leading to trampling and suffocation in the tightly packed area.

The situation worsened because of the narrow space at the venue, making it difficult for people to move to safety. To bring the situation under control, police had to resort to a lathi-charge. Several individuals who collapsed during the commotion were immediately taken to the Karur government hospital for treatment.

A senior police officer later admitted that the tragedy could have been prevented with proper planning and more effective crowd management.
