'Crowd surged to get better view': FIR blames Vijay's late arrival for overcrowding; stampede toll rises to 41

NEW DELHI: The First Information Report (FIR) in the Tamil Nadu stampede case has blamed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief Vijay’s late entry to the rally for “overcrowding and restlessness” among the crowd that eventually led to the death of 41 people and left 60 injured. The stampede at Velusamypuram occurred after actor Vijay stayed inside his campaign vehicle for an extended period. As the crowd surged forward for a better view, the narrow venue became unsafe, and many climbed on steel sheds and trees, which collapsed onto people below, leading to stampede, the FIR said.
