Calling them the “living embodiment of service and sacrifice”, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha hailed the recipients of Network18 Group’s ‘Pride of Jammu & Kashmir’ awards.

Sinha said the awardees have displayed exceptional courage, compassion, and humanity, while inspiring society at large.

“Those who have been honoured today are true role models. In life, a person may achieve wealth, position, and titles, but the greatest happiness comes from serving others and alleviating their pain. That is the highest duty of humanity,” he said. “This initiative not only honours their contribution but also inspires citizens to come forward during crises and natural disasters.”

CLIMATE CHANGE: A GROWING CHALLENGE

Sinha warned that climate change and rising natural disasters are among the greatest concerns. He recalled that August was extremely challenging for Jammu division, where nearly all the 10 districts were hit by devastating calamities.

“These losses can be rebuilt over time, but the priceless lives lost cannot be compensated by any relief. To the bereaved families, I extend my deepest condolences,” he said.

He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, had deputed senior ministers to assess damages in Jammu and Kashmir, reaffirming the Centre’s commitment to rebuilding efforts. He cited alarming global data to highlight the urgency of climate action.

In the last 50 years, natural disasters have increased five times with the United Nations warning that if the trend continues, by 2030, the world may witness one major disaster every single day. In 2024 alone, disasters caused an estimated $320 billion in damages and claimed 15,000 lives.

“We cannot keep polluting our atmosphere, poisoning our oceans, and destroying our lands. We must maintain ecological integrity along with economic growth,” he said, quoting scientists Stephen Hawking and Jane Goodall.

The L-G thanked Brajesh Kumar Singh, Group Editor-Convergence, Network18, and the News18 Jammu Kashmir Ladakh Himachal team for recognising the service and sacrifice of the awardees.

Concluding his address, he called them the true faces of humanity. “Your work is an inspiration. May your right hand always hold effort and your left hand always hold victory,” he said.
