US President Donald Trump said that a breakthrough on Gaza was imminent, claiming negotiators were close to finalising an agreement that would secure the release of hostages and bring an end to the war.

“It’s looking like we have a deal on Gaza… I think it’s a deal that will get the hostages back. It’s going to be a deal that will end the war… It’s going to be peace,” Donald Trump said.

The US President’s comments came amid renewed international focus on the conflict, which has raged for nearly two years and pushed Israeli forces deep into Gaza City, described by Israel as the “last stronghold of Hamas.”

Netanyahu’s Fiery Address At UN

Donald Trump’s remarks coincided with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to the United Nations General Assembly, a speech marked by disruption as dozens of delegates walked out in protest.

Benjamin Netanyahu accused Iran of masterminding a “terror axis” that included the Houthis, Hezbollah and Hamas. He said Israel had successfully targeted leaders of these groups and directly addressed hostages held in Gaza, pointing to a QR code on his lapel as a symbol of his government’s determination to continue the fight.

“The families of our hostages languishing in Gaza… Iran’s terror axis threatens the peace of the entire world, the stability of our region, and the very existence of my country, Israel,” Benjamin Netanyahu declared.

The Israeli prime minister denied targeting civilians, saying the military had dropped “millions of leaflets” urging Gaza’s population to evacuate. His remarks contrasted with a recent United Nations report accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. Benjamin Netanyahu also condemned the decision by the United Kingdom and France to recognise a Palestinian state, calling it “sheer madness.”

The conflict, now in its second year, has exacted a staggering civilian toll. Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry reported the total number of people killed since October 7, 2023, has reached 65,502.
