Former FBI Director James Comey was indicted on Thursday for making false statement to Congress and obstructing justice.

“No one is above the law. Today’s indictment reflects this Department of Justice’s commitment to holding those who abuse positions of power accountable for misleading the American people. We will follow the facts in this case,” Pam Bondi, the US attorney general, tweeted on Thursday.

The case is related to Comey handling of the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election.

During the hearing, Lindsey Halligan, the president’s former lawyer who was recently sworn in as the US attorney for the eastern district of Virginia, asked a grand jury to indict Comey for allegedly lying to Congress in testimony on September 30, 2020.

According to CNN, Comey, a longtime adversary of the president, is now the first senior government official to face federal charges in one of Trump’s largest grievances: the 2016 investigation into whether his first presidential campaign colluded with Russia.

The indictment came after the President named Comey in a social media post chiding Trump-appointed US Attorney General Pam Bondi for not moving quickly enough to bring criminal charges against his most prominent antagonists, writing “JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED, NOW.”

Since Trump returned to office in January, his Justice Department has been examining Comey’s 2020 testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee when he addressed Republican criticisms of the Russia investigation and denied that he had authorised disclosures of sensitive information to the news media, Reuters reported.

Trump fired Comey as FBI director days after latter publicly confirmed that the President was under investigation over his election campaign’s connections to Russia.
