As Super Typhoon Ragasa battered southern China and Hong Kong with fierce winds and heavy rain, residents in Macau witnessed an unexpected side-effect — fish in the streets.

Videos of residents in Macau wading through flooded streets with fishing nets and plastic bags, trying to catch fish swept in by the typhoon, have gone viral on social media platforms.

Some residents were seen loading fish onto their bicycles, while others took selfies with their surprising catch.

A video shared by Shanghai Daily, which quickly gained widespread attention on X, showed the sight of Macau streets flooded with locals gathered in large numbers, trying to catch fish — with some even succeeding.

“After #TyphoonRagasa, seawater flooded #Macau streets — now residents are wading in and catching fish like it’s a giant pond,” the video was captioned.

Many amused users took to the platform to react and share videos of the scene. “Macau streets flooded and people out here fishing like it’s a citywide aquarium. Typhoon Ragasa didn’t just bring rain, it brought dinner plans. Who knew disaster could double as a seafood buffet?,” one use wrote.

Another user joked, “When Macao floods and suddenly… everyone’s a fisherman. Typhoon Ragasa turned streets into seafood buffets—no reservations needed.”

“There’s free fish for everyone! hahhahhaha Incredible scenes of resilience and a darkly humorous silver lining after the severe flooding,” a user pointed out the striking contrast between the chaos of the storm and the cheerful scenes in the video.

The unexpected fishing frenzy wasn’t limited to Macau. Shanghai Daily also shared a similar video from Zhangzhou in southeast China’s Fujian province.

“Super #TyphoonRagasa just dropped a seafood buffet on the beaches in Zhangzhou, southeast #China’s Fujian!” the post read, showing locals rushing to collect oysters by the bucketload after the tide receded.

Typhoon Ragasa Wreaks Havoc

Typhoon Ragasa, the world’s strongest tropical cyclone this year, made landfall in southern China’s Guangdong province on Wednesday. It brought winds of up to 145 km/h after sweeping past Hong Kong and killing at least 14 people in Taiwan. More than 20 others remain missing.

In Taiwan, most casualties were reported after a barrier lake burst in eastern Hualien county. Meanwhile, over 100 people were injured in Hong Kong, where authorities opened 50 temporary shelters for more than 900 residents.

Ragasa had formed last week over the Pacific Ocean and rapidly intensified into a Category 5 super typhoon, with winds exceeding 260 km/h. It hit the Philippines first, then moved across Taiwan and Hong Kong before making landfall in China. It was downgraded to a severe typhoon on Wednesday and is now moving toward Vietnam.
