Typhoon Ragasa, one of the most powerful storms in Asian history and nicknamed the “king of storms,” swept across the Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and southern China, leaving a trail of floods, destruction, and mass evacuations.

The relentless storm unleashed towering waves, fierce winds and torrential rains before weakening over the Chinese mainland. Here are ten major developments.

Eastern Taiwan was hit hardest when a barrier lake burst in Hualien County. Floodwaters swept away a bridge and turned roads into rivers. At least fourteen people were killed when a decades-old lake barrier burst in Taiwan, AFP quoted a government official as saying. 17 are missing and 32 were injured.

In Guangfu township, which has about 8,450 residents, more than half moved to higher floors or safer ground as the water carried away cars and furniture, Times of India reported.

Typhoon Ragasa struck northern Philippines on Monday, claiming at least 10 lives, including seven fishermen who drowned when their boat capsized off Santa Ana in Cagayan province. Five more fishermen are still missing.

Authorities reported that nearly 700,000 people have been affected, with around 25,000 taking refuge in government-run evacuation centres.

Hong Kong experienced strong winds and heavy rainfall as Typhoon Ragasa moved roughly 100 km south of the city.

The observatory recorded winds reaching 195 kph, classifying Ragasa as a super typhoon. Over 90 people were reported injured. Hundreds of trees were toppled, a vessel struck the waterfront, and waves inundated restaurants and hotels. A viral video captured seawater smashing through the glass doors of the Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel.

Over 2 Million Evacuated In Guangdong

More than 2 million people were evacuated before Ragasa made landfall on Hailing Island near Yangjiang city at 5 pm Wednesday in China’s Guangdong province. Winds reached up to 144 kph at landfall. Over 38,000 firefighters and 400 emergency response teams were deployed on standby, while the government earmarked tens of millions of dollars for relief efforts in Guangdong, Hainan, and Fujian.

Streets turned into rivers filled with debris in Macao. Schools, shops and casinos were closed. Rescue teams used inflatable boats to help people trapped in flooded homes. Power was shut off in low-lying areas as a safety precaution, and once the waters receded, some residents took to the streets to catch fish.

Flights Disrupted

Hong Kong International Airport cancelled more than 600 flights earlier in the week. Shenzhen also suspended flights, though some resumed late Wednesday. Rail services in Guangxi were suspended, while roads in the affected areas remained blocked. In Hong Kong, Disneyland, horse races, and schools were closed as residents taped windows and stocked up on essential supplies.
