Rani Mukerji dedicates National Award to her parents

71st National Film Awards: Rani Mukerji dedicates win to her parents; calls it ‘surreal’ and ‘deeply personal’

Rani Mukerji is basking in the joy of a career-defining moment, as she celebrates winning her first National Film Award for Best Actress for ‘Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway’ (2023). For the seasoned star, this honour is more than just recognition, it carries a deeply personal meaning, tied to her parents and a day filled with powerful memories.

Rani Mukerji shares how the award news arrived

While talking about her grand win, Rani told Hindustan Times, “It was truly surreal to hear about receiving the award, as I was performing a Griha Pravesh puja for my new office, which is located at the place where my dad used to live. I had my father on my mind the whole day. I had just finished the puja, and as soon as I sat down, I received the call about the National Award. I truly felt it was my dad’s blessing that it happened in such a way that his presence felt really strong. I was missing him deeply that day, especially because I was doing the puja in the very room where he had passed away.”

The ‘Hum Tum’ actress further continued, “Of course, winning it for Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway makes it even more special because, as I’ve mentioned in earlier interviews, the character of Devika was someone I had modelled on my own mother. I had my mom in mind throughout the shoot. So, in a way, the character I played, Devika, was very much like her. It feels like both my parents have blessed me with this National Award. It’s deeply personal and quite surreal in that sense.”

Rani Mukerji calls honour meaningful for fans

Rani, who has won many awards in her career, said she owes this National Award to her fans. She said this award feels more special for her fans, as the joy in her mother’s eyes and the excitement of her fans made her believe the win was more for them than for herself. She added that as an actor, she always tries to give her best in every film, without thinking about awards, but winning a National Award brings happiness to those who have supported her, and that is the most beautiful part for her.

Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar and others also won National Award

It was not just Rani celebrating this year. Her close friends were also honoured at the National Awards. Shah Rukh Khan shared the Best Actor award for ‘Jawan’ with Vikrant Massey, who was recognised for his powerful performance in ‘12th Fail’.
