The Indian Navy is set to commission the indigenously-built anti-submarine warfare ship Androth into its fleet, a move expected to strengthen its presence in the Indian Ocean.

The second Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), Androth, will be commissioned at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam on October 6.

The ceremony will be led by Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command. This event marks the formal induction of the second ship out of a planned sixteen ASW-SWCs into the Navy fleet.

Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd., Kolkata, Androth features over 80% indigenous components, reflecting the Government of India’s push for Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) in defence production.

The ship was constructed under the guidance of the Directorate of Ship Production and monitored by the Warship Overseeing Team in Kolkata. It was handed over to the Navy on September 13.

The name Androth is inspired by Androth Island in the Lakshadweep archipelago, symbolising India’s commitment to protecting its vast maritime boundaries. The previous INS Androth (P69) served the nation with distinction for over 27 years before being decommissioned. This new ship honours the legacy and spirit of its predecessor.

Equipped with advanced weaponry, sensors, modern communication systems, and waterjet propulsion, Androth is designed to detect, track, and neutralise underwater threats effectively. Beyond anti-submarine warfare, the ship can also carry out maritime surveillance, search and rescue operations, and coastal defence missions.

The commissioning of Androth marks a significant milestone in strengthening India’s maritime security. It will enhance the Navy’s capability to tackle underwater threats and demonstrates India’s growing ability to design and build world-class warships indigenously.
