Heart health is no longer just a concern for the older population. In India, young adults are increasingly presenting with cardiovascular risks and even heart attacks, often silently and without warning. While routine blood pressure checks are important, a proactive and comprehensive approach to heart health can help detect risks early and prevent serious events. A combination of blood tests, imaging, and lifestyle assessment forms the cornerstone of this strategy, especially for the Indian population that exhibits unique risk patterns.

Detect Hidden Cholesterol Risks

“It is important to shift from reactive care to proactive, precision-based prevention. The foundation of this strategy is an all-encompassing diagnostic assessment that goes beyond standard parameters. It starts with a Fasting Lipid Panel, which is essential since cholesterol abnormalities remain the single largest modifiable risk factor,” says Dr. Ajay Phadke, Director, Strategic Business Development, Agilus Diagnostics.

Dr. Phadke points out the ‘thin-fat’ phenotype in India, where even young, lean individuals may have dangerously elevated LDL and triglyceride levels. “Detection of this silent dyslipidemia at an early stage is key to deciding whether lifestyle changes suffice or whether statin therapy is necessary. Standard cholesterol tests can be misleading, making Apolipoprotein-B (ApoB) invaluable as it counts the cholesterol-carrying particles that can enter artery walls. Lipoprotein(a) or Lp(a) is another non-negotiable test for South Asians, given its genetic risk and prevalence,” he adds.

Blood Sugar, Kidney, and Thyroid Health Matter

A comprehensive heart evaluation also includes glycaemic screening. “Diabetes increases heart attack risk two- to threefold,” notes Dr. Phadke.

“In India, it often presents early and asymptomatically. Kidney function tests, including Creatinine/eGFR and Urine ACR, and a Thyroid Function Test are also critical, as hypothyroidism can worsen cholesterol profiles and weight gain,” he adds. High-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) and a metabolic liver screen further help detect inflammation and fatty liver disease, both of which independently elevate cardiovascular risk.

Imaging and Preventive Cardiac Tests

Dr. Amit Madaan, Senior Consultant Cardiology, Fortis Hospital, Faridabad, emphasises, “Young heart attacks are on the rise, especially in India. Preventive cardiac testing is crucial for identifying issues before symptoms arise. Key assessments include Electrocardiogram (ECG), Echocardiogram, Stress Test, and Cardiac CT Coronary Angiography.” Blood tests for cholesterol, hs-CRP, homocysteine, and Lp(a) help guide lifestyle and medical interventions.

A young Indian’s heart health requires vigilance beyond routine check-ups. By combining proactive blood tests, imaging, and lifestyle assessment, hidden risks can be detected years in advance. Early interventions, informed by a comprehensive diagnostic approach, empower individuals to take control of their cardiovascular wellbeing and reduce the likelihood of premature heart events.
