US attorney Jonathan Wasden strongly criticised Donald Trump’s move on the H-1B visa fee hike to a massive $100,000, calling it “100% about appeasing the white nationalist base which supports the US President.”

While taking a jibe at the Trump Administration over its immigration policies, Wasden said that the US President lives in a fantasy where he thinks if he keeps out foreign workers, it will somehow create jobs for people already living in the country.

“It doesn’t work this way because low-skilled jobs just aren’t being filled right now in the US, and Americans don’t want to do those back-breaking labour jobs,” he said while speaking to news agency PTI.

Wasden further said that the visa fee hike does not help American workers but instead hurts US companies and taxpayers. He argued that the policy will make it more difficult for businesses to hire skilled workers and will negatively impact the economy.

“The only people getting hurt by this ban are American companies and American taxpayers, because we’re missing out on all the commerce, all the revenue, all the tax bases, and the ingenuity of the people who would come here and work. So, it’s really just another one of these self-inflicted wounds that the Trump administration is putting on us,” he added.

His remarks came days after the US President announced to raise the H-1B visa fee to a staggering $100,000 (about Rs 88 lakh). The move created widespread panic and confusion among Indian professionals and travellers, as 71-72 percent of H-1B visas are going to Indians.

Later, the White House clarified that the individuals currently holding H-1B visas, including those visiting India or abroad, won’t be affected.

The White House on Saturday (September 20) issued a major clarification to its new H-1B visa policy as panic swept through the tech industry. It said this fee will be a “one-time” payment for only new applicants, and not an annual fee. It will only be imposed on new applicants and not impact renewals as well as existing visa holders.
