Navratri, the festival of nine nights dedicated to Goddess Durga, is one of the most spiritual and energetic times of the year. This year, it will be celebrated from September 22 to October 2. From garba nights to larger-than-life Maa Durga idols in Kolkata, it’s that time of the year when we sing, dance and celebrate each day with our loved ones.

During this period, it is believed that following certain practices can enhance spiritual energy and invite blessings. Many people focus on self-discipline, purity, and devotion during these nine days.

Here are a few things to avoid during Navratri to stay in tune with the festival’s spiritual spirit.

Navratri 2025: Things to Avoid

Avoid onion and garlic

Onion and garlic are considered tamasic foods that increase body heat and dull the mind. Avoiding them can help maintain focus and stay connected with Goddess Durga’s energy.

Avoid non-vegetarian food

Navratri is a time to embrace purity and mindfulness. Eating non-vegetarian food is believed to reduce spiritual energy and make the body lethargic. It is best to focus on vegetarian meals to stay aligned with the festival’s positive energies.

Avoid overindulgence

Excessive eating, spending, or pampering yourself can distract from mindfulness. Practicing restraint supports spiritual growth during Navratri.

Stay away from alcohol and intoxicants

Alcohol and other intoxicants affect rational thinking, cloud judgment, and disturb emotional balance. During Navratri, abstaining helps maintain clarity, calmness, and spiritual focus.

Keep up fasting and charity

Follow your fasts as planned, and remember to give to those in need. Acts of charity are seen as pleasing to Goddess Durga and help strengthen spiritual energy.

Don’t gamble or argue

Games of chance or petty arguments create negativity, such as anger, jealousy, and greed. Navratri is a time for peace, so it is best to avoid such activities.

Don’t skip prayers or meditation

Daily prayers are essential during the nine nights, as each day honours a different form of Goddess Durga. Meditation and prayer keep you connected and invite blessings.

Respect elders and priests

Elders and priests hold an important role during rituals. Treating them with respect aligns you with the festival’s spiritual flow.

Don’t speak badly of others

Negative talk about others disrupts harmony. Maintaining positivity and kindness ensures a peaceful mind and strengthens devotion.

Don’t wear black

Black is associated with negativity and mourning. Wearing bright colours reflects joy, positivity, and the celebratory spirit of Navratri.

By avoiding these actions, devotees can stay mindful, focused, and in harmony with the spiritual energy of Navratri.
