But behind the tinted glass, heavy doors and sleek exteriors lies a delicate balance, one that carmakers walk quietly and carefully: how to build vehicles that are nearly impenetrable, yet still safe for the world outside of them.
Most luxury and mass-market car companies won’t speak openly about armoured vehicles. For security reasons, they say. The silence isn’t just strategic, it’s necessary. The very idea of bullet-proofing, blast-resisting and high speedshielding sits at the intersection of national security, personal privacy and public safety.
Special specs
Within these companies, armoured vehicles aren’t just another variant of sedan or SUV. These internal units perform intense risk assessments and develop specialised specs far removed from the standardised processes of regular car manufacturing. For the carmaker, only vehicles that meet homologation standards can roll off the production line, and armoured ones often don’t. That’s why most are either outsourced to specialist vendors or developed in hidden divisions. “There are maybe a dozen top-tier vendors in India who do this,” says a senior executive from one such firm, speaking on condition of anonymity. “We build to order. Every detail is evaluated—the weight, the tyre construction, the number of protective layers, even how to shape the glass.” And increasingly, lightweight materials—many from Israel—are changing the game. These composites not only protect passengers better, but also reduce the harm to pedestrians in case of impact. Lighter cars mean reduced kinetic force in accidents—an important point, especially during high-speed convoy movements through urban streets. An expert says, “If a 3.5-tonne vehicle hits a pedestrian, the difference between steel and composite could mean life or death.” Not everyone agrees. A leading armour vendor servicing government contracts dismisses the idea that armouring has anything to do with pedestrian safety. “Let’s be clear— these cars are built to save the lives inside, not outside,” he says. “Most people wouldn’t even know they are armoured. The accidents we hear about involving VIP convoys? That’s not about the car. That’s about speed, mindset and poor convoy training. It’s a cultural problem.”
Aemoured luxury
The vehicles are extraordinary feats of engineering. Take the BMW 7 Series Protection. For over 45 years, BMW has quietly led the armoured luxury space. The current generation offers VR9-level protection, capable of withstanding assault rifle fire, grenade blasts and drone attacks. Its Protection Core is a self-supporting armoured shell that encases the passenger cabin—seamlessly integrated into what seems like a regular executive sedan.
From the outside, it’s almost indistinguishable from a normal 7 Series. That, too, is part of the design. “Discretion is protection,” says BMW. Even the windows, layered with highsecurity glass, can shrug off 7.62x54mm R cartridges and grenade shrapnel. It also has a self-sealing fuel tank—designed to close itself after a bullet puncture.
At Mercedes-Benz, the S 680 GUARD 4MATIC pushes the limits further. Built with a bespoke body-in-white—an entirely different chassis from the regular S-Class—it delivers VPAM VR10 ballistic protection, the highest civilian rating. It’s so well-designed that its chassis, transmission and suspension have been modified to maintain the same luxury-ride quality as its showroom cousin. Yet, each door weighs around 250 kg. Under the hood, a V12 engine with 612 horsepower ensures this battle tank can move fast. And over any terrain. All this power and protection is wrapped in leather and silence.
Not all armoured vehicles are engineered at such high standards. In smaller towns and politically tense regions, local politicians often turn to unregulated vendors to bulletproof their vehicles. “That’s where real danger lies,” warns an industry insider. “Improperly modified cars may protect the person inside—but they’re likely to become deadly to the public outside. These builds don’t pass any crash or safety tests. It’s a risk for everyone on the road.”
Insider/outsider
Indeed, the core objective of armouring is singular: protect the occupant. As convoys become more common—moving aggressively, shielded in anonymity—they often become disruptive forces in public spaces. “The pedestrian is always the most vulnerable,” says an expert. “That’s what we forget.”
Even as technology evolves to make these vehicles lighter, safer and more advanced, there remains a stark imbalance—between the safety of the few inside, and the exposure of the many outside, say experts.
