As Bachchan went bankrupt, crew wasn’t paid on time, threatened…

Amitabh Bachchan went bankrupt so the crew wasn't paid and went on strike on the sets of Ajay Devgn starrer 'Major Saab', reveals director Tinnu Anand

While Amitabh Bachchan is the biggest star in the country, he’s seen several ups and downs in his career. He went through bankruptcy when he started his production house Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL). His production house made movies like ‘Major Saab’, ‘Tere Mere Sapne’. In a recent interview, director Tinnu Anand who had directed ‘Major Saab’ has opened up on the difficulties during shoot. He said that since the producer had no money, the crew wasn’t getting paid on time and thus, they became difficult to work with and started throwing tantrums. “When Amitabh Bachchan went corporate, he became bankrupt. Unfortunately, I was making my film for him at the time, Major Saab. We worked in such dire circumstances, only I know. The producer had no money and he had kept the entire unit in one hotel. Just imagine what circumstances it would have been. Every second day the crew would go on strike because they weren’t paid, they were threatening to not work, to not show up.” This experience made Tinnu decide to never ever direct in life. He said, “hat’s why I decided that I’ll never direct after Major Saab. Because the pain with which I have gone through, no one can know. I was insulted by the unit, I could have slapped them, but it wasn’t my production, and I feared they would strike again. So I had to be careful and control my temper.”

For those not in the know, ABCL was producing movies and managing events. But due to lack of proper management and taking on multiple projects together, there were financial issues and the company was declared bankrupt with a debt of Rs 90 crore. Earlier, during an interview with Vir Sanghvi, Bachchan opened up on this phase and he had said, “All assets, all properties were attached. So when you sign a personal guarantee, then you are personally liable to pay that and so there were about Rs 90 crore to be paid back,” Bachchan had revealed. He added, “There were about 55 legal cases and there were creditors on the door every day. Very embarrassing, very humiliating.” From there, Bachchan reinvented himself, and came back with a bang. Thus, he remains nothing short of an inspiration for many.
