Human remains believed to be Travis Decker, the Washington man wanted in connection with the murders of his three daughters, have been found in a remote wooded area south of a town in Washington, according to the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office.

“While positive identification has not yet been confirmed, preliminary findings suggest the remains belong to Travis Decker,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement shared with CNN. This came after an intense months-long manhunt was launched for Decker.

As of Thursday, authorities are processing the scene with assistance from the Washington State Patrol crime scene response team, according to the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office. A DNA analysis will be conducted after the examination.

Who Is Travis Decker?

Decker, a 33-year-old Army veteran, is accused of murdering his daughters, 9-year-old Piatyn, 8-year-old Evelyn, and 5-year-old Olivia. Their bodies were found with multiple plastic bags over their heads at an abandoned campsite in the Washington Cascades on June 2. Decker’s truck was found abandoned in the area.

Decker had reportedly picked up the girls from their mother, Wendy Decker, on May 30 for a planned visitation as part of the couple’s ongoing separation. He was expected to return the children by 8 pm local time that evening but failed to show up. By 8:30 pm, Wendy contacted local authorities to report her daughters’ missing.

Since the discovery of the bodies, the search for Decker has become a multi-agency effort involving the FBI, US Border Patrol, Homeland Security Investigations, and other law enforcement bodies. Decker was initially believed to have fled to Canada, citing internet search history and digital footprints. However, these later turned out to be false leads.

Drones, a swift water team, cadaver dogs and even GoPros have been used in the multiagency search for Decker that navigated through a treacherous terrain and Decker’s three-day head start, according to CNN. Investigators earlier discovered skeletal remains during a coordinated search operation.
