Kamala Harris revealed she was “angry and disappointed” after Joe Biden called her hours before her high-stakes debate with Donald Trump in 2024 to relay that powerful associates of his brother would not support her campaign. The former US Vice President and Democratic nominee recounted the incident in her new memoir 107 Days, offering sharp criticism of Joe Biden’s leadership and campaign style.

In the book, Kamala Harris writes that in September, while preparing in a Philadelphia hotel room for what she called a “big prizefight” debate, Joe Biden phoned to wish her luck. But the conversation quickly turned, she says, when Joe Biden mentioned his brother had spoken to political power brokers in Philadelphia who were unwilling to support her because she had been “saying bad things about him.”

“I just couldn’t understand why he would call me, right now, and make it all about himself,” Kamala Harris writes, adding, “Distracting me with worry about hostile power-brokers in the biggest city of the most important state.”

Kamala Harris said that she then asked Joe Biden to connect her directly with the group but the then-US President instead shifted to rehashing his own poor debate performance against Donald Trump three months earlier.

“I beat him the other time; I wasn’t feeling well in that last one,” Joe Biden insisted, according to Kamala Harris, who says she was “barely listening.” Her husband Doug Emhoff, sensing her frustration, urged her to “let it go” and refocus on Donald Trump.

Kamala Harris also recalled Joe Biden struggling to address the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, writing that his words did not “meet the gravity of the moment.” She also expressed concern about Joe Biden’s campaigning abilities, noting, “His voice was no longer strong, his verbal stumbles more frequent.”

Kamala Harris also shared that she was sometimes castigated by Joe Biden’s team for speaking too well as she wrote in the book, “Their thinking was zero-sum: If she’s shining, he’s dimmed.”
