Lokah: Chapter 1- Chandra has become the 12th biggest hit of 2025

Kalyani Priyadarshan’s ‘Lokah: Chapter 1- Chandra’ has become the 12th biggest hit of 2025

Bollywood is back on top in 2025, dominating the Indian box office with hits like ‘Chhaava’ leading the way with ₹602.54 crore. Romantic film ‘Saiyaara’ followed with ₹329.61 crore. While Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie’ and ‘Mahavatar Narsimha’ also performed well, Hindi cinema secured more than half of the top 12 spots, marking a significant shift from previous years.

Unlike the past few years where films from south of India like Pushpa 2- The Rule or Kalki 2898 AD dominated the box office over Hindi cinema but in 2025 the table of turned. If one has a look at the total box office collection across industries, it is Hindi cinema which has been ruling the roast with more than 6 film in the Top 12 highest grossers of the year. The year’s biggest hit hails for Bollywood which is Vicky Kaushal, Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna’s Chhaava which minted Rs 602.54 crore across languages. At second spot is Mohit Suri, Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda’s Saiyaara which began the biggest romantic film of Indian cinema with a lifetime collection of Rs 329.61 crore. At the third spot is Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kangaraj’s Tamil juggernaut Coolie which earned Rs 284.99 crore and is followed by Mahavatar Narsimha with a collection of Rs 250.20 crore. It has become the highest grossing mythological film of India and is still running in the theaters. At 5th spot is Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR’s War which has collected Rs 236.55 crore. The film was expected to be a major moneyspinner at the box office but it misfired and has now put the Spy universe in existential crises. In the past few years one has seen Telugu films by Prabhas or Allu Arjun to be amongst the highest grossers of the year but in 2025 an old warhorse Venkatesh has claimed that spot with the comedy thriller Sankranthiki Vasthunam which collected Rs 186.97 crore. At 7th, 8th spot and 9th spot is Akshay Kumar’s Housefull 5 with Rs 183.38 crore, Ajay Devgn’s Raid 2 with Rs 173.44 crore and Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par with Rs 166.00 crore. At 10th spot is Ajith’s Good Bad Ugly which minted Rs 153.77 crore, it was the only the second Tamil film to cross Rs 150 crore mark this year. Ram Charan’s long delayed Game Changer, his first post SS Rajamouli’s RRR minted Rs Rs 131.20 crore but much of its collection came from first week, by second week the film had fizzled out. And at 12 th spot is Dulquer Salmaan backed and Kalyani Priyadarshan headlined Lokah with 126.90 crore. It is the only female led film in the Top 12 list and the first one from south of India to cross Rs 100 crore mark. It has achieved this post by beating films like Mohanlal’s Thudarum – Rs 122.00 crore and Pradeep Ranganathan’s Dragon with Rs 102.55 crore. The film though still has long legs at the box office but it looks very unlikely for the film to breach into the Top 10 films of the year.
