Jimmy Kimmel’s top controversies over the years

Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show suspended: A look at his other top controversies over the years - Read inside for details

‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’, the popular late-night television show, has been taken off the air indefinitely. This decision came after Jimmy Kimmel remarked about slain Charlie Kirk in a monologue during his recent episode. Following the same, the Nexstar Media Group’s broadcasting division director called Jimmy’s comment ‘offensive’ and ‘insensitive’, especially at a critical time. ABC spokesperson also told AFP, “Jimmy Kimmel Live will be preempted indefinitely.”

What did Jimmy Kimmel say about Charlie Kirk?

“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said in his monologue during his show. However, this is not the first time Jimmy Kimmel has found himself embroiled in a controversy. Read on to know more about the previous controversies that made news.

When Jimmy Kimmel joked about Detroit

This happened 22 years ago! In 2004, Jimmy Kimmel came under fire after making a joke about Detroit. “They’re gonna burn the city of Detroit down … and it’s not worth it,” said Jimmy, referencing past riots after sports championships. Following this statement, the ABC’s Detroit affiliate refused to air the show. It was later pulled from the network schedule. The host issued a formal apology on air following this.

When Jimmy Kimmel impersonated stars of colour with the use of dark makeup

A few years back, Jimmy Kimmel faced massive backlash for impersonating celebrities of colour using blackface. He played Karl Malone and Oprah Winfrey on ‘The Man Show.’ Clips from his sketches went viral on social media, and the internet was not happy with the depiction. Following the heat, in 2020, Jimmy issued an official statement.“We hired makeup artists to make me look as much like Karl Malone as possible. I never considered that this might be seen as anything other than an imitation of a fellow human being, one that had no more to do with Karl’s skin color than it did his bulging muscles and bald head,” mentioned the statement, according to The New York Times. He continued that as he looked back on his previous comedy sketches, many of them had become “embarrassing, and it is frustrating that these thoughtless moments have become a weapon used by some to diminish my criticisms of social and other injustices.”“I believe that I have evolved and matured over the last 20-plus years, and I hope that is evident to anyone who watches my show. I know that this will not be the last I hear of this and that it will be used again to try to quiet me,” he quoted in the statement.

When Jimmy Kimmel reacted to Donald Trump’s 2024 political victory

As the list of controversies continues, another incident that makes it to the log is when Jimmy Kimmel expressed his disappointment over Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election. During his monologue on the late-night show, he described the night as “terrible” for various women, children, immigrants, and those relying on healthcare and social security. The host didn’t stop there and highlighted potential negative impact on Ukraine, NATO, democracy, decency, and more. Go to Source
