Iranian authorities on Wednesday executed a man convicted of spying for Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency, the country’s judiciary announced.

According to an AFP report, Babak Shahbazi was hanged after his conviction was upheld by the Supreme Court. He had been found guilty of the capital offences of “corruption on earth” and “waging war against God.”

While the timeline of his arrest remains unclear, Mizan reported that Shahbazi worked on the design and installation of industrial cooling systems for companies tied to Iran’s military, security and telecommunications sectors. His access to these sites allegedly enabled him to pass sensitive information to Mossad “in exchange for money and residency in a foreign country.”

The execution comes amid heightened tensions following Iran’s June conflict with Israel. In August, Tehran executed Roozbeh Vadi, an employee of a subsidiary of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran, after convicting him of leaking information on Iranian nuclear scientists and facilities.

In late July, Iran’s intelligence ministry also claimed to have dismantled a spy network, arresting “20 spies, Mossad operational and support agents, and elements connected to the Israeli regime’s intelligence officers” across Tehran and several provinces.

Rights groups including Amnesty International have repeatedly criticised Iran’s extensive use of the death penalty. According to human rights monitors, Iran is the world’s second-most prolific executioner after China.
