American television anchor Beni Rae Harmony has resigned from her position at WICS ABC Newschannel 20, based in Springfield, Illinois. Her resignation after she was suspended for delivering an on-air tribute to conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was recently killed.

Harmony formally announced her resignation on Tuesday. The announcement was made through a statement on her official X account. In the post, she said her decision followed her suspension by the station for what she described as a “non-partisan tribute” to Kirk.

“Effective immediately, I have resigned from @WICS_ABC20 after being SUSPENDED for airing a non-partisan tribute to Charlie Kirk this past Friday,” she wrote. “Many in the mainstream media have been fired or punished for mocking his assassination. I believe I am the first to be targeted for honoring him on air.”

She added that her resignation was driven by her personal values, saying, “My resignation is guided by values that are essential to who I am, which I refuse to set aside in order to keep a job. I choose my faith and love of country, and always will.”

Following her resignation, her bio page on the WICS ABC 20 website was taken down. The station has yet to issue an official comment.

During the tribute that led to her suspension, Harmony spoke emotionally on-air, sharing her past connection with Kirk. She revealed that the 31-year-old had been her first boss and mentor, helping to shape her early career.

Choking back tears, she recalled one of Kirk’s sayings: “When conversations stop happening. When individuals become wordless, that’s when violence begins.” She ended the tribute with a heartfelt, “Thank you, CK, you changed my life.”

Charlie Kirk, founder of the conservative youth group Turning Point USA and a close ally of President Donald Trump, was shot last Wednesday during a speaking event at a university in Utah. Known for his vocal criticism of progressive issues, Kirk was a polarising figure in American politics.

Police arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, the suspect in Kirk’s killing, after a 33-hour manhunt. Authorities said Robinson fired a single shot from a rooftop, striking Kirk in the neck. He is expected to be formally charged on Tuesday.
