How B’wood keeps blurring the line between stardom and fandom

Dilip Kumar to Rajinikanth: How Bollywood keeps blurring the line between stardom and fandom

Fans usually hold their favorite actors in the highest regard, idolizing their style, dialogue delivery, and even their quirks. But what happens when actors themselves step into the shoes of fans—portraying admiration for their real-life idols onscreen? Bollywood has often experimented with this concept, sometimes as a tribute, sometimes as a storytelling device, and sometimes as a clever gimmick to connect with the audience. The released trailer of Varun Dhawan, Sanya Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor starrer ‘Sunny Sanskaari Ki Tulsi Kumari’, which was out on September 15, once again brought this trend into the spotlight. The film’s teaser is sprinkled with witty references to iconic stars and films. Mentions of ‘Baahubali’ in a sequence, Govinda’s cult comedy film ‘Raja Babu’ (1994), and nods to Bollywood divas like Katrina Kaif and Madhuri Dixit instantly resonate with viewers, making the narrative more relatable and nostalgic.

Rajinikanth turns 50 in cinema: Fans go crazy, stars shower praise

But this is not the first time Bollywood has played with the idea of fans within films. Over the years, several movies have portrayed characters who live and dream through their admiration for larger-than-life film stars. Let’s dive deep and find out some of the films in Bollywood where the lead characters are fans of film personalities.

When reel meets real: Films about fans

One of the most famous international examples connected to Bollywood came in Danny Boyle’s Oscar-winning ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, which was released in 2008, where young Jamal Malik grows up idolizing Amitabh Bachchan. The unforgettable scene of a young Jamal diving into muck just to get Big B’s autograph still remains fresh in minds.

SLUMDOG

Back in 2003, filmmaker Chandan Arora’s ‘Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon’ starring Antara Mali and Rajpal Yadav, told the story of a small-town girl, a character played by Antara Mali, whose dream was to become the next Madhuri Dixit. The film explored the struggles of chasing stardom, highlighting the deep influence that film idols hold over their admirers. In ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani,’ Katrina Kaif’s character openly professes her admiration for Salman Khan, adding a humorous and relatable layer to her otherwise quirky role. The sequence turns hilarious when Ranbir Kapoor’s character claims Salman Khan—the superstar—to be his childhood friend.Shah Rukh Khan himself explored fandom in Fan (2016), playing both superstar Aryan Khanna and his obsessive admirer Gaurav Chandna. The film cleverly blurred the line between reel and real, showing how devotion can spiral into obsession.Going further back, Marathi cinema also embraced this theme. Laxmikant Berde once portrayed a fan of a puppet showmaker named Ramdas Padhey in his film ‘Zapatlela,’ which was also dubbed in Hindi with the name ‘Khilona Bana Khalnayak’. Not to forget Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone’s ‘Lungi Dance’ from ‘Chennai Express’, which was released in 2013. Marketed as a “tribute to Rajinikanth,” the song celebrated the Tamil superstar’s unparalleled legacy while also showcasing Bollywood’s admiration for South Indian cinema.

Offscreen admiration: Stars idolizing stars

Interestingly, this culture of admiration isn’t limited or stuck to the screen. Many Bollywood legends have openly expressed their love and respect for their predecessors and contemporaries.

Gauri Khan declares herself ‘die hard fan’ of Madhuri Dixit

The late Dilip Kumar, often called the ‘Tragedy King,’ has perhaps inspired the most heartfelt tributes. Shah Rukh Khan has frequently called him his idol, while Anupam Kher and Amitabh Bachchan too have shared their deep admiration for him. Manoj Kumar once admitted that much of his acting style was shaped by Dilip Kumar’s influence. This admiration transcended industries as well. Kamal Haasan, during a film promotion, revealed that he considered himself a lifelong student of Yusuf Saab (Dilip Kumar). “I don’t know how many people knew it because it was a secret; whenever I used to come here to Mumbai during his birthday, I used to kneel before him to kiss his hand,” he shared.

Yami Gautam is a huge Madhuri Dixit fan

Amitabh Bachchan, during a candid conversation with NDTV, confessed his admiration for both Dilip Kumar and Waheeda Rehman, saying that their artistry shaped his own cinematic journey.

Tributes that keep cinema alive

These cinematic references and personal tributes show that Bollywood isn’t just about stardom, it’s about legacy, inspiration, and the timeless cycle of admiration. When actors pay homage to their idols, whether through a film’s narrative or in their real lives, they add another chapter to cinema’s ongoing love story with itself. Go to Source
