Vaishno Devi yatra resumption put off amid rains

Jammu: The pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi shrine from the base camp Katra in Jammu and Kashmir remained suspended on Monday for the 21st consecutive day.The resumption of Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra, which had been suspended since August 26 when 34 people died in a landslide, was scheduled from Sunday.It has now been postponed till further orders due to incessant rains at the cave shrine on the mountain top and along the route as well, officials said.On Sunday, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board official spokesperson posted on X, “Jai Mata Di! Due to incessant rain at Bhawan & the track, commencement of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra scheduled from 14th Sept stands postponed till further orders.”“Devotees are requested to stay updated through official communication channels,” he said.On August 26, 34 people, mostly pilgrims, were killed and several injured after heavy rains triggered a landslide near at Adhkuwari, half-way on the route from Katra to the shrine.On August 24, Jammu city had recorded its highest rainfall of 190.4 mms in the month of August in the last 99 years.After the tragic incident, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who is also the chairman of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, had constituted a three-member committee to investigate the causes of the August 26 landslide.Meanwhile, on Saturday, Sachin Kumar Vaishya, CEO of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB), chaired a meeting at Katra to ensure hassle-free pilgrimage during the nine-day Navratras, scheduled to begin on September 22.
