A civil society group has alleged that a “conspiracy” is being staged “under military mediation” to restore monarchy in Nepal and “abolish secularism, federalism and the proportional inclusive system”.

The Brihat Nagarik Andolan (BNA), a group representing people from diverse walks of life, has issued a statement stating that “over the bodies of the martyrs of the Gen-Z movement, a grave reactionary conspiracy is being staged—under military mediation to restore the monarchy and to abolish secularism, federalism and the proportional inclusive system.” It said such attempts are “completely unacceptable.”

MyRepublica quoted the group as emphasizing that the sacrifices of the Gen-Z movement were never intended to reverse republicanism and secularism or to expand what it described as the “unconstitutional activism of the military”.

They further said that the “most urgent challenge” at present is to “defeat this ongoing counter-revolution”.

The group termed the army’s role as “profoundly regrettable” and said: “If certain populist politicians are also collaborating with these same elements or encouraging the military to trample upon the heads of the people, then we will recognise them too as leaders of the counter-revolution. They must reflect on this immediately and clarify their position.”

This comes in the wake of Gen Z–led protests against a social media ban and corruption, which spiralled into violent clashes, leaving hundreds injured and prompting the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and several key ministers. According to a report by AFP, the toll from the protest violence stands at 51.

Meanwhile, erstwhile King Gyanendra Shah on Thursday appealed for calm amid political turmoil in the country.

“The recent violence, arson, and vandalism during public demonstrations, which caused significant human and material losses, have deeply saddened us. No system or ideology is greater than civic freedom,” he said in a video post.
