A video has gone viral showing a handcuffed inmate hanging out of the back window of a state prison transport van in Oklahoma City.

The incident was recorded by Tiggin Martin, one of the motorists on Interstate 40, a nearly coast-to-coast highway that runs through the heart of Oklahoma City, on September 2, the video, verified by NBC News, showed.

In the video, the handcuffed inmate could be seen partially covered by an orange jumpsuit hanging out of a removed or broken rear window and making gestures to motorists.

NBC quoted Martin as saying that she and her sister initially thought they were witnessing some sort of joke but the incident went by fast.

“It only lasted for about a minute or two until they pulled off the highway,” she said.

Following the incident, the state Corrections Department issued a statement saying that it was a “routine transport” and the inmate had damaged the vehicle and started hanging out of the back window.

“Our officers immediately recognised the situation, exited the highway and called for additional law enforcement support,” they said, adding that the man was “secured”.

NBC quoted a spokesperson for the department as saying that it will not be releasing the identity of the inmate and it “remains committed to transparency, accountability and ensuring the safety of all individuals in our care and all Oklahomans.”
