Delhi rain under red alert

NEW DELHI: Heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Friday, leading to widespread waterlogging, traffic congestion and disruptions to vehicular movement during peak hours.The IMD issued a red alert, forecasting moderate rain at many places and heavy rain at isolated locations accompanied by moderate thunderstorms and lightning over the next few hours. According to the weather office, Safdarjung recorded 59.2 mm of rainfall till 8.30am, while Lodhi Road received 60.4 mm, Ridge 57 mm, Ayanagar 26.2 mm and Palam 16.9 mm.The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall over Delhi till August 10.Heavy waterlogging reportedHeavy waterlogging was reported near Badarpur Border Metro Station, where rainwater entered the subway, making it difficult for commuters to pass through. Several low-lying roads in the area were submerged, forcing vehicles to move cautiously. Traffic hit across key stretchesThe downpour led to long traffic snarls on major roads.One of the worst-hit stretches was the Barapullah Flyover, where a long queue of vehicles stretched across multiple lanes. Visuals show cars, buses, auto-rickshaws and two-wheelers crawling in dense traffic, with headlights and brake lights illuminating the rain-soaked carriageway. Traffic remained gridlocked in both directions as rain slowed movement during the evening rush hour.
