Marilyn Monroe’s house: All about the quiet California residence

Marilyn Monroe's house: All about the quiet California residence where she took her last breath in 1962

Marilyn Monroe, Hollywood’s legendary actress, passed away six decades ago following a drug overdose in a quiet suburb of Los Angeles, California, in 1962. As the memories of the actress continue to influence pop culture, the house remains a significant landmark. It was the first house she owned, shortly after her separation from her third husband, Arthur Miller. Despite renovations and interior changes, the property remains the same. In 2023, Roy Bank and Brinah Milstein acquired the residence with the intention of demolition, per PEOPLE. However, the L.A. City Council stopped the process by tagging the property as a ‘Historic Cultural Monument.’ As a result, Bank and Milstein sued the city and Mayor Karen Bass, citing that the designation was an unconstitutional taking of their private property. In May 2026, the court dismissed the case, but the owners reportedly amended the complaint. While the current situation sparks controversy, Marilyn Monroe’s residence was iconic real estate back in the day. Here’s a closer look at Marilyn Monroe’s house.

Marilyn Monroe’s house in California

Marilyn Monroe lived in a Spanish-style residence which included four bedrooms and three bathrooms. The 2,624-square-foot California house cost her approximately USD 77,500 in 1962. The abode featured beamed ceilings, terra cotta tile floors, a tiled fireplace and casement windows. Moreover, the exterior featured a yard with a swimming pool, citrus grove, and an apartment attached to the garage, intended to host guests and help friends in need. Adding the extravagant touch, Monroe personally travelled to Mexico to select furnishings for her house.

When Marilyn Monroe said the doors to her house are open for her every friend

“[It’s] a place for any friends of mine who are in some kind of trouble, you know, and maybe they’ll want to live here where they won’t be bothered till things are okay for them,” Monroe said during an interview with Life Magazine shortly before her unfortunate and untimely demise. “Anybody who likes my house, I’m sure I’ll get along with,” she added. After Monroe passed away, the house was sold multiple times, and the owners tried to preserve its integrity. Being her first-owned residence, the property remains special in many ways even today.DISCLAIMER: The property numbers and data in this article are from an industry source.
