NEW DELHI: Nearly nine months after Jan Suraaj failed to open its account in the 2025 Bihar assembly elections, party founder Prashant Kishor on Monday secured his first electoral victory. He won the high-profile Bankipur bypoll, giving the fledgling outfit its first-ever seat in the Bihar assembly.Kishor defeated BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha by 19,324 votes, polling 64,151 votes against Sinha’s 44,827, according to the Election Commission.The victory marks Kishor’s first electoral success since entering active politics and gives Jan Suraaj its first-ever representation in the Bihar Assembly, offering fresh momentum to a political project that had suffered a crushing setback during its electoral debut last year.
From assembly setback to bypoll comeback
The Bankipur result represents a significant political recovery for Kishor, whose Jan Suraaj Party failed to win even a single seat in the 2025 Bihar assembly elections despite contesting more than 200 constituencies.Launched after nearly two years of statewide outreach through the Jan Suraaj padyatra, the party had positioned itself as an alternative to both the NDA and the Mahagathbandhan, focusing on governance reforms, education, employment, migration and corruption rather than traditional caste-based politics. However, the ambitious campaign failed to translate into electoral support.Following the defeat, Kishor publicly accepted full responsibility for the party’s performance.”We made an honest effort, but it was completely unsuccessful. There’s no harm in admitting this. Forget about systemic change; we couldn’t even bring about a change in power,” he had said after the Assembly election results.”There must have been some mistake in our efforts, in our thinking, in the way we explained things. If the public did not show faith in us, then the responsibility for that is completely mine. I take that responsibility 100 per cent on myself.”As an act of atonement, Kishor also announced that he would observe a day-long silent fast, saying he had failed to convince the people of Bihar why they should support a new political alternative.At the same time, he ruled out stepping away from politics.”I will work twice as hard as you’ve seen me work over the past three years. There’s no question of backing down. There’s no turning back until I fulfil my resolve to make Bihar better,” he had said.
Why Bankipur mattered
The Bankipur bypoll attracted national attention because of the political stakes involved for both the BJP and Kishor.The election was necessitated after BJP state president Nitin Nabin vacated the seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha.For nearly three decades, Bankipur had remained one of the BJP’s safest urban constituencies. Before Nitin Nabin represented the seat, it had been held by his father, Navin Kishore Prasad Sinha, making it one of the party’s strongest bastions in Bihar.In the 2025 assembly elections, Nabin had retained the constituency comfortably by a margin of over 50,000 votes.For Kishor, however, the bypoll was much more than a contest for a single assembly seat.After Jan Suraaj’s disappointing electoral debut, the election became a crucial test of whether the party could convert years of grassroots mobilisation into actual electoral success.The contest also marked Kishor’s first direct electoral battle after years of shaping campaigns for other political leaders from behind the scenes.
From strategist to politician
Long before entering electoral politics himself, Prashant Kishor had built a reputation as one of India’s most influential political strategists.Through his organisation Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC), he worked on election campaigns for leaders across the political spectrum, including Narendra Modi, Nitish Kumar, Mamata Banerjee, Arvind Kejriwal, MK Stalin, Jagan Mohan Reddy, Uddhav Thackeray and others.His success as an election strategist later brought him closer to Nitish Kumar, who appointed him as an adviser with cabinet rank after returning as Bihar chief minister in 2015.In 2018, Kishor formally joined the Janata Dal (United) and quickly rose to become the party’s national vice-president.However, differences with Nitish Kumar over issues including the Citizenship (Amendment) Act eventually led to his expulsion from the JD(U) in 2020.After briefly attempting to revive the Congress through organisational reforms, Kishor shifted his focus entirely to Bihar.In October 2022, he launched the Jan Suraaj padyatra, travelling across the state to build what he described as a grassroots political movement that would eventually evolve into a full-fledged political party.Although the movement generated considerable public attention, it failed to produce electoral success in the 2025 assembly elections.The Bankipur bypoll now marks Kishor’s first major political endorsement as a politician rather than as a strategist.
Breaking a BJP fortress
The BJP mounted an extensive campaign to retain Bankipur, deploying senior leaders, ministers and organisational workers to preserve its long-standing hold over the constituency. Despite the party’s efforts, Kishor succeeded in wresting away one of the BJP’s safest seats.The result is significant not because it alters the numerical balance of power in the Assembly, but because it breaks the perception that Jan Suraaj remains merely a political movement without electoral backing.It also establishes Kishor as an elected legislator for the first time.Beyond the numerical gain of a single seat, the victory gives Jan Suraaj institutional legitimacy.The party will now have a formal voice inside the Bihar assembly and is expected to use the legislative platform to strengthen its organisational presence ahead of future elections.Political observers believe the result could encourage more leaders and workers to join the party while helping it build credibility among voters who were hesitant to back it after the 2025 assembly elections.Although one bypoll does not erase the disappointment of last year’s electoral performance, it significantly changes the political narrative around Jan Suraaj—from that of an unsuccessful newcomer to a party capable of winning in one of Bihar’s most politically significant constituencies.
Message to BJP leadership
Even before the counting concluded, Kishor had described the bypoll as something larger than a contest for one assembly seat.”It was an attempt by the people of Bihar to send a message to the BJP’s central leadership that they should appoint a good person as the Chief Minister of Bihar,” he told reporters.Jan Suraaj also celebrated the result on social media, writing on X: “In democracy, the fortress belongs only to the people. Thank you, Bankipur—this is your victory.”

A political milestone
The Bankipur bypoll does not change Bihar’s political arithmetic overnight. The NDA continues to enjoy a comfortable majority in the assembly with 122 seats.However, politically, the result marks an important milestone.After years of being known as the strategist behind other leaders’ victories and after suffering a disappointing electoral debut in 2025, Prashant Kishor has finally secured an electoral mandate of his own.”I am also congratulating those who lost the election. This is a democracy; there are wins and losses in elections. But the Bankipur election was not an election to elect an MLA. This election was to decide on the BJP-NDA government and its leadership. The people of Bankipur have voted that the central leadership of the BJP should consider it and, in the interest of Bihar, hand over the power of Bihar to a good person,” he declared after victory.
