R Madhavan revealed his most expensive purchase is a yacht in Dubai

R Madhavan revealed his most expensive purchase was a yacht in Dubai, and isn't ashamed of it: 'I bought it because I was getting my captain's license'

R Madhavan moved to Dubai a while ago for his son’s swimming career, so that Vedaant Madhavan could train there as at that point to be a swimmer. Vedaant has represented India at several global platforms. In an earlier interview, as Madhavan opened up on moving to Dubai, he also spoke about his costliest purchase ever made, which was a yacht in Dubai. While it may appear to be a luxury possession, the actor said it holds much deeper significance because it helped him achieve a long-cherished ambition of earning a captain’s licence.Speaking to Rannvijay Singha on an episode of Mashable’s Dubai Journey series, Madhavan opened up about his approach to money and admitted that he deliberately avoids keeping a close watch on his finances. “I am really insecure about my bank account. I really do not know how much I have, and how much I can afford to scrutinise it, because I don’t know what will come of it. I have a broad understanding of how much I have,” he said.Although he described the vessel as a modest family boat during a conversation with Curly Tales, Madhavan acknowledged that it remains the most expensive purchase of his life. He added that he has no regrets about spending on it because it was closely linked to a personal milestone. “I have a simple, small boat, which is enough for the family. But I always wanted to get a captain’s license. I want to make every year significant by learning a new skill,” Madhavan said. When he was also asked on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast about his most expensive purchase, Madhavan said, “It’s my house, but apart from that, it’s a yacht.” The actor revealed that he used the COVID-19 lockdown period to study navigation and complete the training required to become a licensed captain.“During COVID, the new skill I learned was getting my captain’s license and learning to navigate a boat. It’s not that difficult. You sit and study for 10-15 days, you give exams and practicals, and they give you a license,” he explained. For Madhavan, the yacht represents more than an extravagant purchase. It not only helped him gain a practical life skill but also became a peaceful retreat where he can spend quality time with his family. That 30–40-foot yacht, worth roughly between $500,000–$2 million (Rs 4 crore–Rs 15 crore). Madhavan had earlier relocated his family to Dubai Marina to support his son, Vedaant Madhavan, in pursuing professional swimming. The move enabled Vedaant to access world-class training facilities and remain close to top-level competitive swimming infrastructure as he continued his international journey in the sport. The family chose a waterfront home in Dubai Marina, a neighbourhood known for its modern lifestyle and marina views. Reports suggest the residence was selected primarily for its convenience and suitability, reflecting Madhavan and his wife Sarita Birje’s focus on providing the best environment for their son’s sporting career. In addition to his Dubai property and yacht, Madhavan reportedly owns an impressive collection of luxury vehicles. His garage is said to include a Mercedes-Benz valued at around Rs 80 lakh and a Range Rover worth approximately Rs 1 crore. The actor is equally passionate about motorcycles. His reported collection features a Roadmaster cruiser priced at nearly ₹40 lakh, along with a Yamaha V-Max, a BMW K1600 GTL, and a Ducati Diavel.Despite owning premium cars, high-end motorcycles, and luxury real estate, Madhavan says his yacht remains his biggest investment. More importantly, he views it as a purchase that brought him independence, memorable family experiences, and the satisfaction of mastering a new skill.
