The National Award-winning music composer, Devi Sri Prasad, or as fondly called DSP, has spent over two decades delivering chart-topping soundtracks across Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi cinema. In his career, he has seamlessly transitioned between soulful melodies, high-energy dance numbers, mass entertainers, and classical scores. Today, as the musical artist turns a year older, he reflects on his journey and expresses gratitude for being loved for his craft and receiving ample opportunities to showcase his versatility.

Devi Sri Prasad feels every project brings its own challenge

In an exclusive conversation with us, we asked DSP to state a particular song which was the ultimate test for him in the two-decade-long career. Replying to it, he said, “I think every film in itself is a challenge. I have always loved working on films that are totally different from each other. I’ve worked on love stories like ‘Varsham’, ‘Arya’, and ‘Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana’, as well as commercial entertainers featuring major stars, such as ‘Shankar Dada MBBS’, ‘Mass’, and ‘Venky’.”He continued, “In Tamil cinema too, I’ve composed for romantic films with Vijay sir and mass entertainers like ‘Singham’ with Suriya sir. I’ve also done songs like ‘Dhinka Chika’ for Salman Khan bhai and item numbers like ‘Ringa Ringa.’ I’ve worked across different genres, and that’s what I love doing. Whether it’s ‘Gabbar Singh’ with Pawan Kalyan sir or ‘Pushpa’ and ‘Pushpa 2’, each film has brought its own unique variety and challenge.”

Devi Sri Prasad says he is blessed to have worked in different genres

Counting his blessings, DSP further shared, “I think for any artist, the biggest excitement comes from working across different genres. I’m lucky and blessed to receive films of all kinds, and that’s what I’ve always focused on.”Citing a particular project, he added, “There was a Telugu film called ‘Pournami’, which was deeply rooted in classical music and classical dance. I especially loved working on that because I had learned Carnatic classical music under my guru, the legendary mandolin maestro U. Srinivas.”“Thanks to all the directors and the wonderful scripts that constantly gave me new challenges. Those opportunities have shaped me into the composer I am today,” concluded the artist.
