DeenTheGreat, whose real name is Nurideen Shabazz, is facing a second-degree felony robbery charge and a misdemeanor battery charge after an alleged incident on a yacht in Miami on May 27. If he is convicted of the robbery charge, he could face up to 15 years in a Florida prison. The case came to light after TMZ obtained court documents, while later reports also confirmed details about his upcoming court hearing. Even as the charges remain in place, Shabazz’s lawyer says he expects prosecutors to dismiss the case soon. A hearing is currently scheduled for August 4.

Why Nurideen Shabazz was charged after the alleged yacht incident

According to court documents first reported by TMZ, the case began after a woman told police that an argument between her and Shabazz turned physical while they were on a yacht. She claimed Shabazz asked her to leave the yacht because other men were trying to speak to her after he allegedly warned her not to entertain anyone but him. The woman also alleged that Shabazz grabbed her forearm when she tried to record what was happening. She told police the incident left a minor scratch on her left forearm. The robbery charge is linked to allegations that Shabazz tried to take her phone during the confrontation. An arrest affidavit states:“The defendant is then seen putting his hands on the victim multiple times attempting to grab her phone where a struggle ensued over the taking of the phone as the victim is trying to get away from him where she could be seen cradling her body to the floor trying to stop the defendant from taking her phone.” Investigators later received security footage from the yacht owner. According to police, the video showed parts of the incident and did not match the version of events Shabazz allegedly gave officers after the yacht returned to the dock.

DeenTheGreat’s lawyer says prosecutors are expected to dismiss the case

Shabazz was arrested on May 27 and was released the following day after posting a $2,500 bond. He is expected back in court on August 4.After details of the charges became public, his attorney, Richard L. Cooper, shared a statement with TMZ, saying:“On May 27th Deen was arrested and charged with a 2nd degree felony, which carries a maximum of 15 years in a Florida prison.”He added:“However, we still anticipate that this case will be dismissed by the prosecutors in short order. We look forward to resolving the case next week.”The charges remain active at this time, and no court has found Shabazz guilty. Prosecutors have not publicly announced any decision on whether the case will move forward or be dismissed. The next hearing is expected to provide more clarity on how the case will proceed.
