Trilogy continues with ‘The Bengal Files’

‘The Bengal Files’ is the third instalment in Vivek Agnihotri’s ‘Files’ trilogy, following ‘The Tashkent Files’ (2019) and ‘The Kashmir Files’ (2022). While ‘The Kashmir Files’ went on to become Agnihotri’s biggest box office hit with Rs 341 crore globally, early signs show that ‘The Bengal Files’ is struggling to maintain steady collections. As reported by The Indian Express, within just five days, the film also witnessed a cut in the number of shows. It opened with 1,102 shows across India but was reduced to 863 shows by Day 5, with an overall occupancy of 34.91%.

Why ‘The Bengal Files’ is important for Vivek Agnihotri

Director Vivek Agnihotri has admitted that the film’s outcome will directly affect his future projects. Speaking to Galatta Plus, he shared, “My biggest challenge is money. Nobody backs our film until the last minute. Whatever money we earned in Kashmir Files, we have put in making The Bengal Files. I don’t know what will happen to me after this [financially].”He further revealed: “We made The Kashmir Files on a budget of Rs 15 crore. We earned Rs 30 crore from that film. We invested it in The Bengal Files. We also borrowed some money to make this film which is yet to be paid.”

‘The Bengal Files’ controversy

Apart from box office struggles, ‘The Bengal Files’ also faced political challenges. Agnihotri claimed in a video message that the film is facing an “unofficial ban” in parts of West Bengal. In the video, he appealed, “My appeal to all of you. And specially to the Bengali community. Stand with us in our fight to release #TheBengalFiles in Bengal.”

What is ‘The Bengal Files’ about

The film looks back at one of Bengal’s most painful chapters in history. It is set against the backdrop of the 1946 Direct Action Day violence and the Noakhali riots. Alongside Mithun Chakraborty and Anupam Kher, the film features Pallavi Joshi, Saswata Chatterjee, Darshan Kumarr and Sourav Das in key roles.DISCLAIMER: The box office numbers in this article are compiled from our proprietary sources and diverse public data.
