From farmer’s son to IAS officer: Meet Prathap Murugan, whose groundwater revival mission with 1,200 abandoned borewells won R Madhavan’s praise

Instead, the actor shared the remarkable story of IAS officer Prathap Murugan, whose innovative approach to water conservation has reportedly helped increase groundwater levels and bring relief to farmers in Tamil Nadu.The story, reported by The Better India, tells how Murugan converted more than 1,200 abandoned borewells into rainwater harvesting units, helping replenish groundwater across parts of Tiruvallur district.
An idea rooted in personal experience
Prathap Murugan was born into a farming family in Virudhunagar, where water was always used carefully. According to the report, he grew up understanding the value of every drop and dreamed of serving society while cycling several kilometres to school as a child.Years later, as the District Collector of Tiruvallur, he noticed a worrying trend. Farmers were drilling deeper borewells every year, yet many continued to run dry. At the same time, rainwater from the monsoon was flowing into drains and canals instead of being absorbed into the ground.That observation led to a simple but effective solution.
Giving abandoned borewells a new purpose
Murugan realised that thousands of abandoned borewells across the district could be reused instead of being left sealed or forgotten. Under his leadership, the district administration converted more than 1,200 dry borewells into rainwater harvesting structures connected to a groundwater recharge system. Instead of allowing rainwater to flow away, it was redirected into these borewells, where it seeped deep underground and replenished depleted aquifers.The project required no massive infrastructure or expensive technology. By making use of existing borewells and involving local communities, the administration created a sustainable and cost-effective solution to a long-standing problem.
Groundwater levels improved
The results became visible after the first monsoon following the initiative. Reports say groundwater levels increased by 5 to 10 feet in several parts of Tiruvallur.Wells that had remained dry for years reportedly began storing water again, hand pumps started working in villages that had depended on water tankers, and many farmers saw water return to their fields after repeated droughts.Madhavan’s post drew appreciation from social media users, with many praising the IAS officer’s efforts and calling the initiative an example of how practical ideas can create lasting change.
R Madhavan’s upcoming film
On the work front, R Madhavan was recently conferred the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi for his contribution to Indian cinema.The actor was last seen in Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar: The Revenge, starring Ranveer Singh in the lead. He will next appear in G.D.N., a biographical drama based on the life of renowned scientist and industrialist Gopalswamy Doraiswamy Naidu.
