He criticized decades of unplanned development and government inaction, questioning why no expert committee has tackled the crisis despite India’s scientific advancements. Acclaimed actor Adil Hussain, who was born and raised in Assam, has voiced deep anger and frustration over the devastating floods currently ravaging his home state. Having witnessed the annual crisis unfold since childhood, the ‘English Vinglish’ actor didn’t hold back in expressing his dismay, revealing that his own family members are among those affected this year. His comments once again bring attention to Assam’s recurring flood crisis and the lack of long-term solutions despite decades of the same devastation.
Adil Hussain on decades of unresolved flooding
Talking to Hindustan Times, he says, “I’ve been witnessing devastating floods every year since childhood and this year it’s even more. I feel terribly frustrated, angry, sad and depressed because the floods is a recurring problem and the authorities since the time I grew up in Assam haven’t been able to manage the situation. Unplanned townships have grown, marshlands have been filled with industries and trees have been cut. There’s been no investigation on how to resolve the issue so people in flood affected areas can be taken care of by reducing their misery.” He further added, “My sister’s daughters, my nieces and their respective husbands have their houses filled with water in Upper Assam’s Sivasagar. I’ve been trying to find a way to help them and the situation is terrible.” He also mentioned staying in close touch with singer Papon, who has likewise been stepping in to help those affected by the crisis.
Adil Hussain calls for a proper flood management plan
According to Hussain, what’s urgently required is a well-rounded flood management strategy. “Indian scientists are sending satellites to the moon and so many countries have tackled the flood situation. Netherlands has reclaimed land from the sea. I cannot understand how government after government cannot find an expert committee- engineers, landspace planners, city planners—to come together and solve the problem.” He also mentioned actively using social media to bring more attention to the crisis and has been calling on people to step up and support relief efforts in Assam.
