Girlguiding unveils first uniform redesign since 1990.
The UK’s largest youth organisation for girls, Girlguiding, has introduced its first complete uniform redesign in more than three decades, giving members greater flexibility over what they wear while keeping a shared identity across the organisation.The updated range means members only need to wear one top from the new collection to be recognised as being in uniform, allowing them to pair it with clothing of their choice.According to Girlguiding, the redesign was shaped by feedback from thousands of Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers, many of whom said they wanted more choice and the freedom to reflect their own style.The new collection includes 30 clothing items, 15 accessories and neckerchiefs, with prices starting at £12 for a T-shirt. Features include hidden waistband pockets, thumb holes and badge sashes that can also be used as cross-body bags. A Brownies gilet has also been designed to double as a pillow.Girlguiding chief executive Felicity Oswald said the redesigned range was created to help members express themselves while continuing to feel part of the organisation.”The new range is all about providing girls with the freedom to express themselves, whilst feeling part of our amazing organisation, with practicality, comfort and sustainability at the very core of the designs,” Oswald said. “We know that self-expression and confidence go hand in hand. With girls in guiding being 30% more confident, the introduction of the new uniform is designed to further nurture that confidence and foster a true sense of belonging,” she said.Members will not be required to replace their existing uniforms immediately and can continue wearing current items until they need new ones.Chief Girl Guide Tracey Foster said members should continue wearing whichever uniform they feel comfortable in, adding that existing clothing can be used until it needs replacing.The redesign follows a Girlguiding survey of 2,000 girls aged between six and 16, which found that 93% said they felt most comfortable when they could choose how to style themselves.Founded in 1910, Girlguiding supports girls aged four to 18 through programmes that include activities, skills development and volunteering opportunities. It aims to build confidence, independence and teamwork, while encouraging community involvement and personal growth through structured group activities across the UK.
