Government’s latest steps on paper leak row
Meanwhile, according to the ANI report, the Union Cabinet on Friday approved amendments to the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, aiming to strengthen the anti-paper leak law as protests continue across the country. Sources indicate that the proposed amendment bill is likely to be tabled in Parliament on Monday, July 27.In a separate development, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has terminated 47 officials in a major crackdown, with sources noting that legal and criminal action will also be pursued against some of them. The move is said to be part of a complete overhaul of the NTA, which has faced repeated controversy over paper leaks. This marks the sixth major decision taken within 24 hours under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has warned that those harming the future of the country’s youth “will not be spared.”
Background of the protests
The national capital has witnessed prolonged protests over the issue, with activist Sonam Wangchuk, who joined the demonstrations, ending his 26-day hunger strike the previous night. Opposition parties have also extended support to the protesters’ demands.PM Modi had earlier stressed that nothing is more important than the welfare and future of the youth, announcing the setup of fast-track courts for swift and strict punishment in paper leak cases.
