Quote of the day by Benjamin Franklin: 'Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety' and a lesson on whether to choose freedom or control

Quote of the day by Benjamin Franklin.

A statement that Benjamin Franklin said on a specific issue became a memorable quote over the years. The founding father of America wrote a letter on behalf of the Pennsylvania Assembly to the colony’s governor in 1755. It was meant to be an economic and political statement about tax sovereignty. During the French and Indian War, the Pennsylvania Assembly wanted to tax the massive landholdings of the colony’s proprietors (the Penn family) to fund defense on the frontier. The Penn family offered to pay a small lump sum for defense, provided the Assembly agreed to waive its right to tax their lands in the future. The Assembly refused the offer. In Franklin’s mind, accepting a temporary handout (“a little temporary safety”) in exchange for giving up the legislature’s fundamental constitutional right to pass tax legislation (“essential liberty”) was a dangerous trade.

He wrote: ‘Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety’But the quote became a memorable saying on the danger of trading fundamental rights for short-term comfort. The quote implies that if you surrender core freedoms just because you are scared, the “safety” you get in return is fragile and fake. A system powerful enough to take your liberty will eventually use that power against you, leaving you with neither freedom nor protection. Absolute safety is impossible without total, authoritarian control. To live in a truly free society, citizens must accept a certain amount of vulnerability. You cannot build a completely risk-free world without building a cage.People rarely surrender their rights when they are calm; they do it when they are panicked. The quote acts as a warning against letting immediate crises or fear drive permanent, structural changes to a society.

Freedom vs control

Franklin’s quote speaks about the choice between freedom and control. It reminds us that fear makes people vulnerable to bad deals. When people are frightened, they are often willing to hand over fundamental rights to anyone who promises to protect them. But absolute safety is impossible to achieve, and the control granted during a crisis usually remains long after the danger has passed. The quote serves as a lasting reminder that trading away fundamental human rights for short-term comfort usually leaves a society with less freedom and no real protection in the end.

Who was Benjamin Franklin?

Benjamin Franklin (1706–1790) was one of the most remarkable polymaths in history — a true polymath who excelled as a writer, inventor, scientist, diplomat, and statesman. He is celebrated as one of the key Founding Fathers of the United States. He was the only founding father to sign all four key founding documents: Declaration of Independence (1776), Treaty of Alliance with France (1778), Treaty of Paris ending the Revolutionary War (1783), US Constitution (1787).Franklin was internationally famous for his scientific experiments long before he entered revolutionary politics. His famous kite-and-key experiment proved that lightning is a form of electricity. He coined common electrical terms still used today, including battery, charge, positive, and negative. Despite his massive influence on the creation of the presidency and the government, Franklin was never President of the United States. However, his face has graced the $100 bill since 1914.
