Marvel Studios’ ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ kicked off its box office campaign in spectacular fashion, with advance tickets for its premium Infinity Vision screenings selling out within hours of going on sale on Monday, July 20.Tickets for the next big ‘Avengers’ film went on sale, five months before its December 18 release. Various box office trackers reported that the film has already topped presales for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ in some spots and beating the ticket sales of ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ in under two hours. Keeping up with the hype around the film, theatres have reportedly even added 3 am previews to meet 80% fill rates.

The early ticket rollout is limited to Infinity Vision auditoriums—a new Disney certification for premium large-format theatres offering enhanced screen quality, brightness and sound. The move is part of Marvel’s strategy to secure premium-format screens ahead of its theatrical clash with ‘Dune: Part Three’ which has reportedly secured a three-week IMAX release window.

Fans took to social media throughout the day to share screenshots of sold-out showtimes and long virtual queues as they rushed to secure seats for opening-night and opening-weekend screenings. Several fans even claimed that securing ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ tickets were more difficult to obtain than recent event films such as Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and ‘Dune: Part Three’. However, Marvel Studios has not released any official presales business data.

Fans back ‘Doomsday’ to beat ‘Dune’ at the box office

Following the ‘Doomsday’ trailer release, fans took to social media to share their reaction to the upcoming box office clash with ‘Dune’ on 18 December. While the ‘Dune’ film franchise, directed by Denis Villeneuve, has grossed over USD 1.12 billion globally across two films, the ‘Avengers’ franchise is the highest-grossing film franchise in history, having grossed over USD 7.8 billion globally across four films. ‘Doomsday’ also comes after the mammoth success of ‘Avengers: Endgame’, which is the highest-earning film in the franchise, bringing in over USD 2.79 billion worldwide.

About ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will have a runtime of approximately 165 minutes, making it one of the MCU’s longest films. As per reports, it is currently the second-longest film, only behind ‘Avengers: Endgame’ which is reportedly set to get an additional 7-minute extension for its re-release titled ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’.The film also features Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU, this time portraying Doctor Doom, and serves as the first part of Marvel’s two-film conclusion to the Multiverse Saga.
