Tripura DGP Anurag Dhankar found dead at police headquarters in Agartala

NEW DELHI: Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar was found dead at his office at the state police headquarters in Agartala on Monday, officials said.Following the incident, chief minister Manik Saha, chief secretary J K Sinha and other senior government officials visited the hospital, news agency ANI reported. The cause of death was not immediately known.The circumstances surrounding his death are under investigation, and further details are awaited.

Who was Anurag Dhankar?

Anurag Dhankar, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Tripura cadre, took over as the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) in May 2025 after serving as DGP (Intelligence).A highly decorated officer with over three decades of service, Dhankar was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service.He began his career in Tripura in 1995 and served in several key positions, including SDPO of Longtharai Valley, Superintendent of Police of the undivided West and South Tripura districts, Superintendent of Police (Special Branch) and AIGP (Headquarters).Dhankar also served with the United Nations Mission in Kosovo during 2003-04, gaining international policing experience.He spent several years on central deputation. Between 2005 and 2013, he served as SP and DIG in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). After returning to Tripura, he was appointed IGP (Law and Order) from 2013 to 2016.From 2016 to 2023, he was again on central deputation, serving as IG (Research and Correctional Administration) in the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), IG (Personnel) in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and later as Joint Director and Additional Director in the CBI.Dhankar also headed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the ministry of home affairs to probe the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
