Delhi Police has issued an official statement regarding the shifting of activist Sonam Wangchuk from the Jantar Mantar protest site to a hospital, stating that the action was taken following directions from the Delhi High Court and expert medical advice. In a post shared on social media platform X, Delhi Police said Wangchuk was moved due to his deteriorating health condition and to provide essential medical care. According to the police statement, the authorities carried out the action while complying with court directions. Delhi Police also alleged that some protesters attempted to create obstruction during the process, which resulted in a brief law-and-order situation. The police claimed that maximum restraint was maintained and the exercise was completed safely. The police have appealed to protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar to peacefully vacate the protest site at the earliest. The statement emphasized that the decision was linked to medical concerns surrounding Wangchuk’s prolonged hunger strike. Sonam Wangchuk had started his fast on June 28, and concerns over his health reportedly increased as the protest continued. The matter later saw intervention from the Delhi High Court after his condition deteriorated. Reports from the protest site indicated that Wangchuk had experienced significant weight loss during the extended hunger strike. The latest development has led to a fresh exchange of claims between authorities and protesters. While Delhi Police maintains that the move was carried out under legal and medical guidance, supporters have raised questions about the manner in which Wangchuk was taken from the protest venue.
