Saudi Arabia launches challenge for local chefs to upgrade Hajj and umrah pilgrim meals

The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has initiated the “Eashathon” challenge in Makkah, aiming to innovate and elevate the catering services for millions of pilgrims. This competition invites Saudi chefs to develop creative solutions that improve food quality, safety, and the overall spiritual experience of Hajj and Umrah, aligning with Saudi Vision 2030’s goals.

Launch and purpose of the Eashathon challenge

On Monday, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah officially launched the “Eashathon” challenge at its headquarters in Makkah during its annual Innovation Makers Forum. The event was held under the patronage of Deputy Minister Dr. Abdul Fattah Mashat and attended by key officials including Dr. Amr Al-Madah, Undersecretary for Hajj and Umrah Services, alongside ministry partners.This initiative is designed to enhance the pilgrim catering system by encouraging groundbreaking ideas focused on food preparation, distribution, and safety. It seeks to foster a competitive environment that supports creativity while ensuring compliance with global quality and safety standards.

The challenge specifically targets outstanding Saudi chefs, empowering them to devise innovative catering solutions that will both elevate service quality and embody the spiritual significance of the Hajj and Umrah experiences. The competition is structured to nurture a spirit of creativity and innovation, helping to transform promising ideas into practical applications that benefit millions of pilgrims.

Integration with innovation and entrepreneurship

The “Eashathon” is a flagship program under the Ministry’s Center for Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship. This center plays a critical role in activating partnerships with entrepreneurs and startups, channeling innovative ideas into viable projects aimed at improving the pilgrim experience.During the same forum, the Ministry also launched the third edition of the “Sustainable Solutions for Guests of God” challenge. This included presentations by 13 startup companies showcasing projects in accommodation, housing, and transportation, laying the groundwork for future cooperative agreements to improve overall service infrastructure.

Alignment with Saudi vision 2030

This challenge is part of the Ministry’s broader strategy to develop unique initiatives that empower national talent and enhance service efficiency. By fostering innovation in catering and other essential services, the Ministry aims to provide pilgrims with a seamless, rich, and integrated experience. These efforts are closely aligned with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, which emphasizes creativity, quality, and sustainability in delivering services to the Guests of God. Go to Source
