In a significant development, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced during an ongoing high-level meeting in Delhi that Aadhaar card will now be accepted as valid identity proof for voter registration under the SIR (Special Summary Revision) process. Previously, only 11 official documents were recognized for voter ID verification. Following the Supreme Court’s directive, the ECI has now included Aadhaar as the 12th accepted document. However, officials clarified that Aadhaar will be used only for identity verification, not for automatic inclusion in the voter list. If necessary, additional documents may be requested to verify authenticity. This move is expected to ease voter registration for many citizens who lacked the earlier 11 documents.
