The 65-year-old comedian shared a photo of herself hand-in-hand with an unidentified man she identified as 22 years old, captioning the post simply: “He’s 22. Have at it, internet.”The post immediately generated a huge response across social media, where users commented on the age gap love story. However, Griffin quickly followed up with a clarifying statement explaining the true nature of her post.”You Guys! Thanks to all those who participated in my social media sociological experiment! No, I’m not dating this 22-year-old. He was helping me with security during my trip to NYC. But… what if I were? The reactions were fascinating,” Griffin wrote, revealing that the entire scenario was designed to test how social media users would respond to such a relationship announcement.
The social experiment and platform differences
Griffin elaborated on her observations from the experiment, noting stark differences in how various platforms responded. She described reactions on Instagram as mostly positive, while other platforms produced significantly more critical responses. “Older men have been dating younger women since the beginning of time… Just ask Luke Wilson, 54, who just had a beautiful baby with his 24-year-old girlfriend,” she pointed out in defence of her hypothetical scenario.Griffin went on to reference other high-profile relationships with significant age gaps. “Or Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, or Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart, Jay-Z and Beyonce… some of the most long-lasting beautiful relationships in my beloved (though ageist and sexist) industry,” she wrote, suggesting that society applies different standards to age-gap relationships depending on gender dynamics.She concluded her statement with characteristic humour: “Relax… just a little harmless fun.”
