Elon Musk claims SpaceX will send thousands of people to the Moon and Mars within the next 10 years

Elon Musk claims SpaceX will send thousands of people to the Moon and Mars within the next 10 years

Elon Musk has laid out another far-reaching vision for SpaceX, saying the company could return humans to the Moon within the next few years and eventually move thousands of people beyond Earth. Speaking during an interview with Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Musk described plans that would go far beyond short astronaut missions, including permanent settlements on the lunar surface and the first human journeys to Mars. The timeline he offered is among the most ambitious SpaceX has proposed so far. Musk acknowledged that some of the targets may sound extreme, especially considering how limited human activity beyond Earth has been. Only a small number of people have ever travelled to the Moon, all during NASA’s Apollo programme more than five decades ago.

Elon Musk unveils 10-year SpaceX vision: Thousands of humans could soon live on the Moon and Mars

During the interview, Musk said SpaceX hopes to send astronauts back to the Moon within the next two to three years. From there, he suggested the company would work towards expanding access, eventually allowing ordinary people, not just government-trained astronauts, to travel to the lunar surface. He described a future where a large lunar base could support thousands, or even tens of thousands, of residents and visitors within the next decade. Musk admitted the scale of the goal was difficult to compare with current space activity, noting that humanity has so far sent only a handful of people to the Moon. SpaceX’s Starship vehicle is central to these plans. The company has been developing the large spacecraft as a reusable system designed for missions beyond Earth orbit. It is intended to carry both cargo and passengers, though the vehicle is still undergoing testing and has yet to complete a crewed flight.

Mars missions could follow within five years

Musk also spoke about SpaceX’s long-standing goal of sending humans to Mars. He said the journey would be considerably more difficult than reaching the Moon because of the distance involved and the length of time astronauts would spend travelling through space.Despite those obstacles, he predicted SpaceX could send its first humans to Mars within the next five years. After that, he suggested the company could eventually transport thousands of people to the planet over the following decade.Mars has been a central part of Musk’s vision for SpaceX since the company’s early years. He has repeatedly said that creating a settlement on Mars could help make humanity a multi-planetary species. However, previous timelines for human missions have passed without those milestones being reached.

Musk’s earlier predictions have often moved beyond reality

Musk’s space ambitions have frequently been accompanied by aggressive deadlines. He has previously predicted that humans could reach Mars within a decade, with similar forecasts dating back more than ten years. As reported by Forbes, some of SpaceX’s earlier plans have also taken longer than initially expected. In 2017, the company announced plans for private passengers to fly around the Moon as early as 2018, but that mission did not happen. The development of complex spacecraft and space infrastructure has proved slower than many early estimates suggested. Starship itself has required repeated testing and redesign as SpaceX works towards making the vehicle fully operational.

SpaceX is also looking beyond rockets

Alongside plans for human exploration, Musk discussed another area of SpaceX’s future ambitions: space-based computing infrastructure. He said the company plans to launch its first artificial intelligence satellites in the near future and eventually expand the effort on a much larger scale. The concept is linked to SpaceX’s broader interest in using its satellite network, including Starlink, for new technology applications.Building large-scale computing systems in orbit remains an emerging idea, with questions around cost, energy supply, maintenance and the practical challenges of operating advanced hardware in space.

A huge financial goal tied to Mars ambitions

Musk’s plans for SpaceX are also connected to the company’s long-term valuation goals. According to filings related to SpaceX, Musk could receive a significant number of shares if the company reaches certain targets, including achieving a multi-trillion-dollar valuation and establishing a large Mars settlement.SpaceX has become one of the world’s most valuable private companies, driven largely by its rocket programme and Starlink satellite internet business. Musk remains one of the world’s wealthiest individuals, with his fortune closely linked to the performance and future growth of his companies.Whether SpaceX can achieve the scale of expansion Musk described will depend on technological progress, funding, safety approvals and the ability to solve the many challenges involved in keeping humans alive away from Earth. For now, the Moon and Mars remain ambitious destinations on the company’s roadmap. Go to Source
