PM Modi chairs CCS meet on Nepal crisis, appeals for peace amid ‘heart-rending’ violence

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed deep concern over the ongoing violence in Nepal, describing the situation as “heart-rending” and appealing for peace and stability in the neighbouring country

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed deep concern over the ongoing violence in Nepal, describing the situation as “heart-rending” and appealing for peace and stability in the neighbouring country.

Speaking after chairing a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting held upon his return from a tour of flood-hit Himachal Pradesh and Punjab., PM Modi said the panel discussed recent developments in Nepal where at least 19 people have lost their lives in the unrest.

“On my return from Himachal Pradesh and Punjab today, a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security discussed the developments in Nepal. The violence in Nepal is heart-rending. I am anguished that many young people have lost their lives. The stability, peace and prosperity of Nepal are of utmost importance to us. I humbly appeal to all my brothers and sisters in Nepal to support peace,” he said in a post on X.

Nepal is facing a deepening political crisis after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday amid widespread protests that have gripped the country for two consecutive days.

The unrest, sparked by a government ban on social media, escalated dramatically as demonstrators stormed multiple government buildings, setting fire to Parliament and the residences of several senior political leaders.

The violence follows the deaths of 19 people in clashes with security forces on Monday.

The protest movement, led primarily by students under the “Gen Z” banner, has evolved into a broader uprising against the ruling establishment.

Initially focused on internet restrictions, the demonstrations have grown to reflect mounting public anger over alleged corruption, poor governance, and disconnect between the political elite and ordinary citizens.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi conducted aerial surveys of the flood-hit regions in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh to assess the scale of damage and ongoing response measures.

He also announced financial assistance of Rs 1,500 crore for Himachal Pradesh and Rs 1,600 crore for Punjab to support relief and rehabilitation efforts in the flood-affected states.
