US President Donald Trump did not support Israel’s decision to carry out airstrikes against Hamas leaders in Qatar, a key US ally, the White House said on Tuesday, reported AFP. The Israeli military reportedly targeted senior Hamas figures meeting in Doha, including the group’s chief negotiator, making Qatar the latest country in the region to be struck by an Israeli operation.

While Israel’s Channel 12, citing an unnamed Israeli official, claimed Trump had approved the strike, the White House firmly denied any prior endorsement. The move has sparked international alarm, particularly given Qatar’s role as a central mediator in ongoing ceasefire negotiations related to Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he ordered the strike in response to recent attacks in Jerusalem and Gaza, according to Reuters.

Among those killed in the strike were the son and a senior aide of Hamas leader Khalil Al-Hayya, reports say.

The international response was swift. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the Israeli action, warning it risked further regional escalation. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres also criticised the strikes, calling them a “flagrant violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Qatar.”
