The state is drafting a comprehensive ‘Coastal-Malnad Karnataka Tourism Policy 2026’ to unlock the region’s tourism potential, Minister K J George’s office said on Friday. The policy will focus on cruise tourism, beach tourism and world-class visitor infrastructure. The proposed policy covers six districts across the coastal and Malnad regions. The minister chaired a meeting with senior department officials on Thursday evening to review progress on various initiatives and discuss long-term strategies aimed at positioning Karnataka as one of India’s leading tourism destinations, it said. The policy seeks to promote theme-based tourism circuits, beach tourism, cruise tourism, adventure tourism and community-led initiatives that generate sustainable economic opportunities for local communities. The state tourism minister instructed officials to formulate a comprehensive strategy to attract more international cruise liners to Mangaluru and other ports in the state, the release said. He emphasised the need to develop attractive tourism circuits and curated travel experiences that encourage cruise passengers to spend more time in Karnataka. He directed officials to consult major cruise operators to understand industry requirements and incorporate their suggestions into the new policy framework, it added. Calling for greater emphasis on beach tourism, the minister said the policy should include initiatives to develop Blue Flag beaches, improve cleanliness and safety standards, strengthen tourism infrastructure, and promote water sports and adventure activities to offer visitors a world-class coastal tourism experience. He instructed officials to enhance visitor amenities at destinations managed by the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation and Jungle Lodges & Resorts by improving accommodation, basic infrastructure, sanitation, visitor information systems and other essential services to elevate the overall visitor experience. “Tourism is not merely about developing destinations; it is about creating a world-class experience for every visitor,” George said. “By strengthening infrastructure, improving connectivity, ensuring safety and delivering quality services, Karnataka can further enhance its position on the global tourism map,” he added.
