Free navigation in Hormuz essential: PM Modi to Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian

NEW DELHI: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian briefed PM Modi about the recent developments in West Asia and the way forward in a phone call, said the Indian govt. On X, Modi said he reiterated the importance of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz for India and the world, and called for lasting peace. An Indian readout said Modi welcomed the understanding between US and Iran and reiterated India’s position that all issues must be resolved through dialogue & diplomacy. “PM reiterated the need for continued efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region, and for safeguarding freedom of navigation and commerce,” said the readout.Modi said on X, “Welcomed the progress made in the negotiations and expressed hope that continued efforts will lead to lasting peace in the region. Reiterated the importance of freedom of navigation in the Hormuz Strait for India and the world.” Pezeshkian had invited Modi earlier for the funeral of late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei that begins on July 4. However, India has decided to send MoS for external affairs Pabitra Margherita and Bihar governor Syed Ata Hasnain for the multi-day programme. An Iranian readout said Modi told Pezeshkian India would be sending a special delegation for the funeral. This was the third conversation between Modi and Pezeshkian since the war in West Asia started on Feb 28. The talks took place amid uncertainty over diplomatic efforts to implement the June 17 interim peace deal. India’s delicate balancing act has seen Modi condemning attacks on GCC countries while remaining engaged with Pezeshkian and stressing that India remained a friend of Iran.
