A youth in Nepal lives in all the lavishness that life has to offer, while the other struggles to meet the necessities of life. The life of “Nepo Kids” in Nepal seems to have fueled the anger of hundreds of youth who hit the streets, demanding a change in government.

A ban on social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, was just the trigger of protests brewing for a long time against corruption. “Nepo Kid” was among the biggest trends on Nepalese social media, where users bashed children of politicians for living opulent lives allegedly funded by money earned through corruption, using hashtags like #NepoKids and #NepoBabies.

The trend reached millions in the country after the ban was imposed on September 3, ultimately forcing the government to remove 26 sites, The Kathmandu Post reported.

“Nepo Kids show off their lifestyle on Instagram and TikTok, but never explain where the money comes from,” a user wrote on TikTok.

A person on Reddit’s Nepal subreddit said children of elite politicians know exactly where their parents’ money and luxury come from—taxpayers.

“While we struggle, they live in utter privilege. Start listing their social media accounts and archiving their content to hold them accountable and prevent them from erasing the evidence,” read the post.

“Our taxes, their luxury… We pay, you flex,” said another person.

‘We Want A Youth Leader’: Nepal’s Gen Z

As many as 19 protesters were killed and over 300 were injured as hundreds of youth hit streets in Kathmandu and other parts of Nepal on Monday.

A smile of happiness can be seen on the faces of protestors in Nepal who brought down the KP Sharma Oli government within just two days of agitation. With the resignation of Oli, protesters now want a youth leader to lead the country.

A protester said, “The Parliament building is set on fire by the Gen-Z protestors. Yesterday, Nepal Police personnel killed at least 19 students. The protest is not because of the social media ban, but we are protesting because we want a youth leader. We want change. The Gen-Z demands a youth leader…”

Another protester called current politicians “corrupt” and said the next Prime Minister and the President should be from Gen-Z. “This is our country. This country belongs to Gen-Z. The politicians have run away; they are all corrupt. The Prime Minister and the President should be from Gen-Z. Our country will rise again. Nepalis are strong, Nepalis will not bow down in front of anyone,” he said.
