Nepal Protests: A wave of violent protests, led by Nepal’s “Gen Z”, continued for the second day after protestors resorted to arson and vandalism in various parts of Kathmandu and other regions of the Himalayan nation.

The protestors agitating against the government over its decision to ban social media platforms set the Supreme Court building, a private media house office, and other buildings, situated in key administrative area of the capital city, on fire.

They also breached the ‘Singha Durbar’, a key administrative complex in Kathmandu, after breaking through its western gate and set fire to the main building, reported The Himalayan Times.

Singha Durbar is the seat of Nepal’s government’s various ministries and offices. The building was rebuilt and put into use after being damaged during the 2015 devastating earthquake.

Witnesses reported that the crowd forced its way past the main gates into the country’s central administrative complex.

Some protesters also stormed the Parliament as the situation escalated sharply in Nepal on Tuesday. They were also carrying firearms near the New Baneshwor area, heightening tensions around Parliament.

Additionally, the central office of the Nepali Congress in Sanepa, party office of the CPN-UML in Chyasal, Lalitpur were also vandalised.

Several political leaders, including cabinet ministers, were injured after Gen Z protestors torched and set ablaze their residences and official buildings.

Meanwhile, Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli tendered his resignation on Tuesday after anti-government protests, launched against the government’s ban on social media, spiralled out of control. The protests left 19 people dead and over 300 others injured. The protests have escalated a day after Oli revoked the ban on social media, a key trigger for the nationwide protests.

The protesters, under the banner of Gen Z, shouted slogans such as “KP Chor, Desh Chhod” (KP thief, leave the country) and “Take Action Against Corrupt Leaders” in multiple parts of the capital city, Kathmandu, news agency PTI reported.

Amid the ongoing agitation, the Gen Z protestors torched the residence of Oli’s residence in Bhaktapur, while he was at the Prime Minister’s residence at Balwatar.

Residences of former Nepali Prime Ministers Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda, Sher Bahadur Deuba, and Jhalanath Khanal were also damaged by protestors.

Protesters set fire to the house while Khanal’s wife, Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, was inside. She sustained severe burn injuries and was rushed to Kirtipur Burn Hospital, Khabarhub reported.

According to family sources, her condition is critical, with burns on multiple parts of her body and serious damage to her lungs.

The residence of Energy Minister Deepak Khadka was set on fire by protesters.

Authorities are struggling to contain the violence as protesters continue to move through key government and political sites in Kathmandu.

Protests in Nepal escalated on Tuesday, despite curfew orders in Kathmandu and other parts of the country, and even after the country’s government lifted the ban on social media.
