NEW DELHI: Flash floods triggered by incessant rainfall has wreaked havoc across parts of the Northeast, submerging roads, damaging homes and triggering landslides in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. Dramatic visuals from Ledum village in Arunachal Pradesh’s East Siang district showed floodwaters inundating roads after a river overflowed, while survivors recounted how the deluge “washed away everything.” The first wave of floods in Assam has affected more than 22,000 people across six districts following days of heavy rainfall in the state and neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh, officials said. Floods and landslides have also caused widespread damage in several parts of Arunachal Pradesh, inundating houses, disrupting infrastructure and prompting rescue and evacuation operations.Meanwhile, the death toll from a rain-triggered flash flood in Arunachal Pradesh’s Keyi Panyor district rose to three after the body of a missing man was recovered in the adjoining Papum Pare district on Sunday. Authorities said 128 households have been affected in the district, while a relief camp set up at the NEEPCO campus is currently sheltering 60 displaced residents as search and rescue efforts continue.

Visuals from Possa village in Arunachal Pradesh’s Keyi Panyor district showed widespread destruction caused by a cloudburst-triggered flash flood on June 24 that killed one woman, while four others remain missing. NDRF teams are conducting search and rescue operations in Yazali, Keyi Panyor district, to trace people missing after a cloudburst-triggered flash flood on June 24 that claimed the life of a woman.”Five people were reported missing in the NEEPCO area. The SDRF, district administration, and police initiated a search operation…The NDRF team arrived yesterday and is searching. We are utilising special equipment, canine units, and boats to search various locations…Additional teams equipped with specialised gear are set to join us today, so we will likely intensify the search operation by evening,” ANI quoted deputy commandant Anand Kumar Patel as saying.

Visuals from Assam’s Dhemaji district showed several areas submerged after continuous heavy rainfall triggered a flood-like situation. Heavy rainfall and severe riverbank erosion caused a partial collapse of a railway bridge over the Simen River in Assam’s Dhemaji district, prompting authorities to suspend train operations on the affected route, a Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) official said. According to the NFR, more than 110 mm of rainfall in and around Dhemaji triggered flooding and extensive bank erosion, affecting the bridge between Archipathar and Simen Chapari stations. The bridge, originally built in 1965 and later converted to broad gauge, was structurally sound, but the erosion washed away a significant portion of the riverbank, destabilising one of its supporting piers.Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said he is closely monitoring the flood situation in Dhemaji district and has directed two senior cabinet ministers to camp in the flood-hit region to oversee relief and rehabilitation efforts.”Since the flood situation has unfolded in Dhemaji, I’ve been closely monitoring the situation. We are deeply saddened by the impact it has had on the lives of our people and in this difficult time, we firmly stand with them. We are deploying a whole of government approach and mobilising all our resources to prioritise the immediate safety and long term rehabilitation of all families affected,” he said in a post on X.
